The major city on Sri Lanka`s south coast is a popular travel destination. Galle holds the distinction of being South Asia`s best-preserved marine fort. This 90-hectare (222-acre) attraction, which is a living heritage monument, is a wonderful fusion of architectural styles with fortifications that mimic those in the coastal regions of Portugal. After Galle was conquered by the Dutch in 1640, its defenses were further strengthened along the lines of the walled cities of Europe. The deep verandahs of homes supported by timber or masonry pillars are a clear example of Dutch and English colonial architecture. Originally founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it reached its pinnacle under Dutch authority in the 18th century, offering roomy homes, wide roads, and all necessary amenities inside its boundaries, including an advanced sewage system. Nothing compares to the Dutch Fort in Galle when it comes to walled towns. The primary port of call for ships traveling between the East and Europe was this World Heritage Site on the south coast. This location is highly renowned for its fine-sand beaches, the world-famous \"Galle Dutch Fort and Dutch City,\" surfing hotspots, blue whale viewing areas, water sports, turtle hatcheries, top hotels, seafood restaurants, and a variety of other tourist attractions.
